The above quote from Colossians might seem like an irrelevant scripture, since who in your social circles has been tempted to judge you for either keeping a new moon celebration or for `failing to keep the event? However, this scripture became very relevant to me recently, and I invite you into my story.
Let’s see how the lunar cycle of the moon got my attention…
In this day of screens everywhere—computers, smart phones, tablet notebooks, TVs, vehicle back up cameras and all sorts of other digital devices–which we stare at both night and day we may forget there is a moon out there. Even if we should remember, we may not remember it has cycles and may even have a purpose beyond a decorative, night sky fixture. We may also have forgotten the wisdom of God’s creative provision:
” Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.” Genesis 1:14-19, emphasis added.
Isaiah, the prophet often wrote of the person and mission of Messiah, Jesus (Yeshua). He also had a “word” about the end time reign of Messiah that focuses on that night time phenomenon:
“And it shall come to pass
That from one New Moon to another,
And from one Sabbath to another,
All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the Lord.” Isaiah 66:23
Before we go any further, let me make a confession: I have embraced the Messianic message for the last seven years and passionately observe and keep Sabbath, but I had not “officially and from the heart” celebrated the new moon’s appearance until the New Moon of 1 Elul (August 16, 2015). I planned ahead and purposed to observe this event. Maybe something about the times we’re living in right now and my desire to “cover my bases” with the Lord has made this event a priority. The conviction came before the understanding, or you could say, “My spirit ‘got it’ before my mind comprehended it.”. I am now endeavoring to “understand” what I’ve undertaken. It would seem that if, as Isaiah says, the Lord is counting time by New Moons and Sabbaths then I’d best find out more about this moon business. As I said, I already look forward to, observe and enjoy the Sabbath experience. So, come along and join me in this moon quest.
